His mission is to create an atmosphere of worldwide inclusion, not just tolerance, towards all people. Mykee hopes that all audience members will leave his performance with that wonderful awakening feeling of beauty: beauty within one’s self and the beauty within others; the celebration of our differences, and the acceptance of our shared experiences; and indeed we all had those feelings in 2009 and 2011. __________________________________________________ ___________________________________________________________ THE PHILADELPHIA ALLIANCE ANNUAL BREAKFAST Since 1984, The Philadelphia Alliance has sponsored an Annual Breakfast each fall. Attendees have included state legislators, City Council members, Executive branch officials from the Commonwealth and executives and staff of state, county and city mental health, mental retardation and substance abuse divisions, as well as providers, advocates and service recipients. This annual event allows government decision-makers and funding source managers to hear first-hand about issues of mutual concern - together with a broad array of stakeholders. It is also an opportune time for directors and managers of our member agencies to discuss issues informally with their respective City officials and colleagues. ______________________________________________________________ ______________________________________________________________ The 27th PHILADELPHIA ALLIANCE BREAKFAST “Connecting Communities” October 28, 2011 8:00 a.m. to 10:00 a.m. At the Park Hyatt Philadelphia at the Bellevue. We were extremely proud to present The Philadelphia Alliance Inspiration Award to Marcus Allen, the CEO of ACHIEVEability, for the fabulous work that his organization does to assist people in building their lives and become self-sufficient. The mission of ACHIEVEability is to “permanently break the cycle of poverty for single parent, low-income families, many formerly homeless, through education, supportive services, community and economic development, housing, and accountability.” Marcus Allen is the dynamic leader of this outstanding organization and most worthy of our 2011 Inspiration Award.
We were also thrilled to have Honorable Daylin Leach and Stewart Greenleaf as our Keynote Speakers. They are a bipartisan combination of State Senators with stature who shared with the audience their perspective on how our community of human service agencies is viewed by government and how we might position ourselves to have more impact in government decisions and direction.
The provider community is Connecting Communities, by our major collective role in the economic engine of the state as we provide a safety net to our most vulnerable citizens, supporting people to remain in the workforce or preparing them to re-enter or enter employment. Our Keynote Speakers addressed a related topic of keen interest to both of them, that is alternatives to incarceration and successful reentry from prison. Mahlum, the Founder and President of Back On My Feet. Back On My Feet is an organization that encourages and supports people who are homeless to get into running. Anne started the program right here in Philadelphia; She had an idea, an inspiration; and she made it happen. Now the program has grown and spread successfully to several other major cities. Back On My Feet declared October 22nd as Sneaker Day in Philadelphia. See: http://philadelphia.backonmyfeet.org/release-anne-mahlum-awarded-2010-inspiration-award.html THIS WAS: “A Sneakers Optional Event” We were also very pleased to have Keith A. Kirkland as our Keynote Speaker. Keith is a Peer Support Specialist for the Veteran’s Administration; and he was once homeless for an extended period of time in a previous time of his life. His life story is definitely worth hearing; and there is much to learn from Keith. His talk promises tobe enlightening, inspiring and instructive regarding the homeless condition, the human experience, and the service system. __________________________________________________ __________________________________________________ The 2009 Annual Breakfast on October 16, 2009 was the 25th Annual Philadelphia Alliance Breakfast. In addition to an Award Recipient and a Keynote Speaker, we also celebrated the 40th Anniversary of the creation of The Philadelphia Alliance. We celebrated by honoring the Past Presidents and Founders of The Philadelphia Alliance. We were very pleased and proud to have Brian Beale, author of the book, “Colin Gets a Chance”, as our Keynote Speaker. His book, “Colin Gets a Chance”, is about awareness and acceptance and value in all. The story centers around Colin's baseball team and focuses on the day of the biggest game of the year. The bigger story is how Colin's teammates rally behind him to give him a chance, which is all Colin ever wanted since the day he put on his uniform. Not only is it a chance to play but, for Colin, it's a chance at life. You can read more detail at www.colingetsachance.com
And we are most proud that The Philadelphia Alliance Leadership Award was presented to Frank P. Since its founding in 1977, Child Advocates has trained more than 3000 attorneys who contribute pro bono services valued at more than $3 million annually. __________________________________________________ __________________________________________________
